Response to the question “Why do you study History?” that people seem to love asking:
Because it’s not just words in a book; it’s places, people, smells and memories. Touching a piece of the roman wall in London, interviewing a WWII veteran, categorizing death records from the American Civil War is history.
History is people’s lives, actions and memories. It’s a study, but also an experience. It’s not for the faint of heart, but for the strong of mind who dares to remember not only the good, but the bad of the world.
That’s why I study history.
